Knee Pain Treatment

Knee conditions are a common ailment treated by Osteopaths. The knee is the largest joint in the body and a major weight-bearing joint, also it’s one of the most frequently injured joints in the human body.

Knee pain can have a number of different causes and can feel debilitating. Some conditions causing knee pain may require surgery, but many can be helped with following good advice, exercise and treatment. The knee joint lies between the femur and tibia and at the front is the patella or kneecap. It is made up of ligaments, muscles, capsule, synovial membrane and two ā€˜cā€™ shaped pieces of cartilage which sit between the femur and tibia known as the menisci. Damage, strain or sprain to the structures of the knee can give rise to knee pain symptoms.

Causes for pain in the knee

It can be the result of a sudden injury as often seen in sports injuries or it can be by repeatedly placing strain on an area of the knee, often in the workplace. Incorrect alignment of the knee or kneecap and altered joint mechanics in relation to other joints such as the hips and knees are often profound.

Osteoarthritis or wear and tear is a common condition that affects the knee. Common symptoms in the knee include aching, pain, stiffness, a locking sensation, swelling, limping and difficulty fully straightening or bending the knee. X-rays, scans and other tests are sometimes required to make a diagnosis and your osteopath may refer to your GP or a specialist for any additional investigations or treatment.

All osteopathic patients that present with knee pain will receive a comprehensive knee examination from the osteopath including range of movement testing, muscle testing and a series of special tests to help come to a working diagnosis.

An optimal treatment plan will be created by your osteopath to help enable full function of the knee with a return to daily activities. It is often appropriate to see your osteopath again once you are pain free so that they can fully assess the knee in its normal state and examine any bio-mechanical factors that may have contributed to your injury.
